The Ship Inn Hotel Review, Elie, Fife, Scotland
You’ll be drawn to the beer garden, where the barbecue fires up from midday (and of course, there’s fish and chips as well). Beach garden tables are on a first come first served basis, but guests who are staying get priority.
In the restaurant the dinner service starts at 5pm, which is handy if you want to feed small children and get them to bed. It’s a great space with big windows looking over the bay, full of people obviously enjoying themselves. Portions are generous, with traditional Cullen skink offered alongside outrageously tender pork belly, scallop and muhammara skewers for starters.
Follow with crispy breaded lemon sole underpinned by a joyous pile of beautifully cooked summer vegetables: samphire, tiny fresh peas and perfect asparagus. Or perhaps try a venison and brie burger. And don’t overlook the wine list: short but definitely not humdrum.
At breakfast there’s a full cooked breakfast, eggs Benedict, grilled kippers, and pancakes with bacon and maple syrup to fuel you for the day.
